In 2007, Avila University employed me as an adjunct professor in the School of Education to teach a course on creative activities. In Summer 2008, a position opened for a Generalist with a background in Special Education and I was hired as a full time Assistant Professor.
Initial courses included General Methods of Education and Psychology of the Exceptional Child for both undergraduate and graduate certificate students in Fall and Spring semesters. I also continued to teach Creative Activities.
As my time as a faculty member in the School of Education progressed, opportunities to teach additional courses arose. To see full list of courses taught, click here. I was also encouraged to create several Masters' level courses during my tenure in the School of Education. To see examples of courses created, click here.
My average fall and spring semester load ranges from 12-15 hours, as well as 3-9 hours of coursework in the summer. I also supervise two student teachers per semester.
In 2010, after participating as the Avila Representative on the planning committee for the FaCET'S conference at UMKC, I approached Sister Marie Joan Harris to discuss the planned SoTL initiative at our university. I am now the Director of the Center for Transformational Learning in addition to my duties as an Assistant Professor of Education in the SOE.
