Dr. Donnell's area of expertise is literacy acquisition, with emphasis on diagnostic teaching of reading. She has specialized expertise in working with culturally and linguistically diverse client populations. She has extensive experience in providing professional development sessions for educators: one-on-one coaching, leading professional learning communities, and professional development at the school and district level. She came to Avila after 30 years in the public schools; during that tenure, she held positions at the classroom, school, division, and district level. She has participated in international reading research conferences as invited guest and presenter. She recently conducted research in Havana as an invited member of an international delegation studying the impact of the Cuban National Literacy Campaign in its fiftieth anniversary year. She is at present working with the Kansas City Mayor's Office on the Turn the Page literacy campaign, an initiative focusing on supporting volunteers providing reading tutoring to elementary-aged children. Dr. Donnell currently teaches undergraduate and graduate certification classes in foundations of literacy and the diagnostic and reflective teaching of reading.
